NH Gunfight at OK Corral

Sidekicks play an extremely significant role in most of the Western films that we have seen. The role that Martin plays as Ethan's sidekick in The Searchers is that of a true sidekick. Martin never leaves Ethan's side no matter what. Even though Ethan is not particularly nice to him he is still right there along side him. This is an aspect that we do not see in Gunfight at OK Corral. Many people may consider the role that Doc plays alongside Wyatt to be that of a sidekick, but I disagree. The two characters spent more of the movie learning things from each other and adding important aspects of one another to their lives. Doc teaches Wyatt what it takes to survive in the harsh west and Wyatt teaches Doc how to be a better man. Throughout the film the two characters are also not always by each others side. If one of them was a true sidekick, they would never leave the other. Both Doc and Wyatt and independent characters and neither of them acts as a true Alpha Male Cowboy. If one of them had to be viewed as the Alpha Male Cowboy it would have to be Doc. He is the character iwth the superior gunslinging ability and sends out the bad boy with a good heart persona.
If it weren't for Doc, Wyatt never would have survived at OK Corral. Doc saves him on numerous occasions by being quick with his gun. Wyatt may have been a marshall but he clearly did not have the true instincts that it took to be the Alpha Male Cowboy. The best way to view these two characters is as companions paired up to fight together in the west. They are a good match for each other being complete opposites and they learn some extremely important lessons from one another.
